Chimney Liner and Repair in Louisville

The liner is the part of the chimney most homeowners never think about because they can't see it. It's also the part that matters most for fire safety.

A chimney liner does two things. It contains combustion byproducts and directs them out of the house. And it protects the surrounding masonry from the heat and corrosive gases that burning fuel produces. Without a functioning liner, those gases and that heat have direct access to the mortar joints and the surrounding structure. In a wood-burning system, a flue fire in an unlined or damaged chimney can transfer heat directly to the framing members behind the masonry. That's how house fires start in chimneys that look fine from the outside.

Many Louisville homes built before 1940 have unlined flues. The brick masonry was considered sufficient at the time, and in those decades it often was. But a century of thermal cycling, moisture intrusion, and use has left the mortar in a lot of those original flues in a condition where gaps and cracks exist throughout the liner that no amount of exterior repair addresses. Chimney liner installation in an older Louisville home isn't an upgrade. For a chimney in active use, it's a safety requirement.

Chimney liner repair applies when the existing liner is cracked, has experienced a flue fire, or has deteriorated to the point where it's no longer providing continuous protection but isn't damaged enough to require full replacement. Cast-in-place liner systems can repair cracks and gaps from within the existing flue. Stainless steel liner installation is the standard for full relining, running a continuous insulated metal liner down the length of the flue to the firebox connection.
